Showcasing shipbuilding careers to school students – Naval Shipbuilding College

Showcasing shipbuilding careers to school students

Thursday, June 2, 2022

From visiting schools to taking part in career conversations with teachers and parents, the Naval Shipbuilding College (NSC) has been excited to connect with young people across Australia to chat about the many career opportunities in Australia’s Naval Shipbuilding Industry.

In South Australia, our outreach included visiting Henley High School with a former student, Oscar, who is now working as an Apprentice Metal Fabricator with BAE Systems Australia. Oscar joined NSC Training Solution Manager Paul to highlight trade roles in shipbuilding and answer students’ questions.

NSC also enjoyed an opportunity to meet students from Para Hills High School as they explored their options in shipbuilding at TAFE SA’s Regency Campus, where they tried their hand at virtual welding and visited the NSC’s career stand and heard that undertaking the Taster Course on the NSC website is an excellent first step, along with joining the NSC’s Workforce Register for free one-to-one career guidance.

The NSC and BAE Systems Australia hosted pre-service teachers from the University of South Australia‘s Teaching for Tomorrow program. The aspiring teachers toured the Osborne Naval Shipyard South and learnt about industry opportunities for students, enabling them to develop and deliver curriculum that is relevant to Australia’s Naval Shipbuilding Industry.

In Western Australia, the NSC and our industry partners, Austal Australia and Naval Ship Management (Australia), have been proud to take part in the Department of Education WA’s  2022 Career Conversation events. At multiple events – in person and online – we have spoken with many parents and teachers around pathways into shipbuilding.

During National Careers Week Australia, the NSC celebrated the teachers and career practitioners in schools around the nation who are working with young people to help them navigate the world of work and consider their future career.

The NSC supports high school career educators and teachers through our partnership with Explore Careers. We work together to share videos, industry updates and resources. To find out more visit:
