Quarterly events update – Naval Shipbuilding College

Quarterly events update

Thursday, June 2, 2022

It was another busy quarter packed with exciting events for the Naval Shipbuilding College (NSC) team!

From Adelaide to Perth to Sydney, the team has relished the opportunity to engage with industry, education, Commonwealth, State and Territory stakeholders, along with the Royal Australian Navy (Navy) on the various projects and career opportunities within Australia’s Naval Shipbuilding Enterprise.

In May, the team attended the Adelaide Career and Employment Expo as part of the Defence SA ‘Defence and Space Industries Zone’ alongside key shipbuilding and space organisations. Over the course of the two-day event, we had the opportunity to speak with many school students and aspiring shipbuilders and Candidate Engagement Consultant, Ed, gave two presentations on the exciting career opportunities available  in shipbuilding.

The team travelled to for Western Australia for ‘Careers Expo’ – Perth’s longest-running careers, training and employment expo where they engaged with students and job seekers over four days. We had many in depth discussions about trade and engineering opportunities currently available in Western Australia!

Attending three Australian Defence Force (ADF) Transition Seminars in Sydney, Adelaide and Perth, the team spent time engaging with transitioning members on the career opportunities available upon their discharge.

To round out the quarter, the NSC was invited to attend and exhibit at the HMAS Encounter commissioning, held at the Torrens Parade Grounds in Adelaide. The event, honouring the Navy’s new South Australian headquarters took place on the last Saturday in May where the public, serving ADF members, families, veterans ex-service associations and community groups gathered to commemorate the commissioning.

We also attended and hosted several education events for both school and university students.

Students were able to explore engineering pathways and learn more about the naval shipbuilding industry at the Adelaide University Engineering Society Industry Engagement Night where the NSC was proud to be a gold sponsor.

In May, the NSC, ASC and Saab Australia spoke to final year engineering honours students at Flinders University in May. Students heard from an Electrical Engineer and Mechanical Engineer from ASC, as well as a Software Team Lead from Saab. They each discussed their journeys, their roles and what they enjoy most about working in the shipbuilding industry. This was a great opportunity for the NSC to highlight the shipbuilding industry and encourage students to consider a career in shipbuilding.

The NSC also attended the One+ Career Expo for students from Gleeson College, Golden Grove High School, and Pedare Christian College. The team spoke to students about the trade and engineering opportunities within the shipbuilding industry.

The National Naval Shipbuilding Pipeline Scholarship Pilot cohort two students had the opportunity to attend a ‘Building Your Brand’ webinar, presented by Right Management and the NSC. Jacqui from Right Management taught the students about soft skills, how to write a resume and how to use LinkedIn.

From one busy quarter to the next, the NSC team is looking forward to continuing our events outreach right across Australia!
