During National Science Week, NSC showcased the vital role of science, technology and innovation for the future of our oceans.

National Science Week is Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology. It acknowledges the contributions of Australian scientists, provides an opportunity to inspire the next generation and encourages young people to be intrigued by STEM and think about the world we live in.

This year, National Science Week took place from Saturday, 15 August 2020 to Sunday, 23 August.

To celebrate the 2020 theme, ‘Deep Blue: innovations for the future of our oceans’, NSC partnered with Questacon – The National Science and Technology Centre to deliver an interactive webinar for students, teachers and parents. This webinar focused on the science and technology behind ships and submarines and the vast array of career opportunities available across the in Australian Naval Shipbuilding Industry. Questacon took participants through a live demonstration of the basic science behind shipbuilding, from how ships float through to how a submarine submerges.

Nick Howie, Training Solutions Manager from NSC, highlighted how this science and technology translates to future careers. From working in an office, to working on Australia’s naval vessels above and below the seas – there are long-term opportunities for everyone in one of the most technologically advanced industries in the world!

Webinar participants then had the opportunity to understand what this might look like in real life, as Engineer, Harry Hubbert shared his career pathway. Harry studied Naval Architecture at the Australian Maritime College, before commencing his engineering career in the Royal Australian Navy –he is now Chief Technology Officer for Greenroom Robotics.
