New faces, new events and new partners – Naval Shipbuilding College

New faces, new events and new partners

Tuesday, July 9, 2019

The college has recently opened an office in Western Australia and we have announced Duncan Powrie as the Deputy Program Manager who will be working closely with the educational and training institutions in Western Australia.

Specifically, both South Metro TAFE and Edith Cowan University are currently completing their self-assessment for training and course endorsements by the Naval Shipbuilding College.

We anticipate welcoming both organisations on board very soon following provisional endorsement.

The College has also been successfully working with Queensland TAFE in Cairns which has just achieved endorsement of their welding program.

Recently the Federal Government picture has become a lot clearer and we look forward to working with the new Minister for Defence Linda Reynolds and the new Minister for Defence Industry Melissa Price.

I’d also like to give a warm welcome to Ian Irving who has been appointed Chief Executive for the Naval Shipbuilding Institute, the joint venture which oversees the Naval Shipbuilding College contract.

Ian brings a wealth of experience and expertise from the Australian defence industry and we look forward to learning and advancing the workforce development in naval shipbuilding together.

In May, the Naval Shipbuilding College hosted the inaugural Naval, Academia and Industry Conference which was held in Geelong, Victoria.

This was a great success with more than 300 stakeholders attending.

Delegates heard from a number of experts on a wide range of topics including the role of technology in training methods for the future workforce.

Looking forward, we have a number of marquee events planned.

We’re launching a series of roadshows in five states in Australia in the next three months.

We will be bringing together government, industry and educational players in the major metropolitan areas across Australia to focus on what the future careers will be in naval shipbuilding.

There is a lot going on to introduce and implement new training to prepare for the exciting careers that will be rolled out very soon.

We will be a prime sponsor of the Defence Teaming Centre’s Annual Defence Industry Dinner and Awards Ceremony in July, a premium partner at the Indo-Pacific Defence Conference being held in Western Australia in August and also attending the Australian Defence Industry Awards.
