Vital experience leads to opportunity
Future software developer Maria Vargas Duque says the inaugural National Naval Shipbuilding Scholarship Pilot has given her invaluable work experience and insight into Australia’s Naval Shipbuilding Industry.
As Maria prepares to finish her honours thesis in engineering at Queensland University of Technology (QUT), she says the scholarship provided funds to enable her to immerse herself in her studies and gave her the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of Australia’s Naval Shipbuilding Industry. “There were a lot of conferences I got to attend - it was really amazing hearing about all the big things happening across Australia in naval shipbuilding,” Maria said.
Maria won a full time role with a Melbourne health tech innovation and commercialisation company – and says the work experience she gained at Laser Central, a family-owned metal, laser-cutting company in Darra, Queensland, was crucial. “The experience gained during the scholarship really set me up to gain full time employment in the industry,” Maria said.
